I have spent over 2/3 of my life teaching math to students.  I love watching students learn, seeing the “light bulb go on.”  I have 4 children, ages 18, 15, 5, and 2.  I  also consider every student and parent who comes into Just Math to be a part of my family.  I take great pleasure in helping raise students’ self-esteem and self-confidence, and my students know that I will do everything possible to help them succeed, even if it kills me!  : )

Karla R.

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in (Pure) Mathematics at California State University, Hayward.  I was a recipient of the High Honor Achievement Award for a senior in 1997.  I also received an MVP award for Track and Field and Cross Country Running in my earlier years of college.

Through the CSUH Credential Program, I worked as a teacher' s assistant for Head of the Math Department at San Mateo High School.  The classes included I, Algebra II, Trigonometry and Geometry (CPM).

Since 1986, I have tutored students of all ages, Kindergarten through college-level, basic study skills and mathematics.  For about 7 years, I also worked as a Before-and-After (Annex Program) school teacher and P.E. teacher through the San Mateo-Foster City Unified School District.
Although I enjoyed teaching in the classroom and for the school district, I preferred working at a more personal level with each student.  Every student has individual needs.  Those needs depend on age, personality, subject matter, motivation, self-esteem and confidence.  At Just Math Learning Centers, I am able to achieve my goal as a teacher including flexibility to work with all ages, personalities, and levels of mathematics and in a clean, friendly, safe, and relaxed environment.

As a parent, I understand the difficulties and frustrations of juggling work, school, homework and extracurricular activities.  Hopefully I can help by motivating and encouraging students and by building self-esteem, confidence and math knowledge.
I sometimes think of myself as a math coach and cheerleader, rather than a math tutor and teacher.  : )

B.S. Mathematics - Texas Lutheran University
B.A. Biology - Texas Lutheran University
M.S. Genetics - UC Davis
California Credentials - single subjects: Mathematics and Life Science

I have been tutoring since 1983 during graduate school.  I have taught in public (Davis Sr. High School) and private (Sacramento Country Day School) for 15 years.  I served as Math Department Chair for 10 years and Student Council Advisor for 7 years at Sacramento Country Day School.  I also worked as the Education Coordinator for a teenage drug treatment program while living in Cincinnati.

I work at Just Math Learning Centers for the personal contact and accountability with students that is possible here.  It is often difficult to attain in a classroom with more than 20 students.
My goal is to improve students' understanding even more than their performance on tests and homework.

B.S. Chemistry - California State University, Sacramento 2003
A.S. Physics - Sierra College 2001
A.S. Chemistry - Sierra College 2001
A.S. Natural Sciences - Sierra College 2001

I have always enjoyed mathematics and anything to do with numbers.  My love of statistics comes from my love of sports and its abundance of statistics.  Throughout my educational career, I have excelled in math.  In high school, I assisted my Pre-Calculus instructor in teaching the class.  In college, I took Quantum Mechanics in the Physics and Chemistry departments, concurrently.
I love helping others.  All through school I tutored my fellow students.

I have tutored professionally for 8 years.  I am married to my wife, Brianne, and we have two daughters, Skye and Kaci.  I also love a good joke.  : )

B.S. Electrical Engineering - U.C. Davis
M.B.A. - Santa Clara University

Math has always been my favorite subject in school.  I graduated from UC Davis in 1988.  As part of the engineering curriculum, I took several courses in college level calculus and other courses that applied mathematics and calculus.  I graduated from Santa Clara University in 1993 with a Masters in Business Administration.  At SCU I took courses in statistics and applied statistics and mathematics to solve various financial and operational business problems.

I have worked in the telecommunications industry as an engineer and program manager throughout my career.   Currently, I work and live in Roseville.  I came to Just Math because I enjoy helping students of all ages improve their mathematics skills.  I understand through my own experiences the importance of math skills in education and the working world.

I have tutored my sister in college calculus.  I have volunteered in Junior Achievement, delivering math sessions to 7th and 8th graders.  I currently volunteer at a local elementary school during 2nd grade computer lab, helping students learn math with the computer.

I have a patient, encouraging style, and I like to mix in a few laughs or a discussion about sports along the way!

B.A. - Mathematics - Cal State Northridge
M.S - Technology Management - Pepperdine University

I went to elementary school and high school in New York City. Math has always fascinated me, and I thought that when I went to school that I would be a Math major. But then I found something wonderful; computer programming, or using math to build things.  I graduated from Cal State Northridge in 1979 with a BA in Mathematics, and took my first job in 1976 as a computer programmer.

In my career, I have used Statistics as a Forecast Manager and Business Analyst, Geometry for Product Design, Algebra for programming computers and building forecasts. Many of the jobs I have require Mathematical Analysis, even Calculus to understand design or process flow.  I received my Masters from Pepperdine University in 1992, which included traveling to Europe and Asia to understand the impact that culture has on communication and management. We also learned how to initiate and manage change in organizations (and in individuals).

Currently, I own The Clean Room, an environmental consulting company, am an Ambassador for the Roseville Chamber of Commerce, sit on the board for the Placer Women's Network, and have been appointed to a number of committees for the City of Roseville. My husband Roger and I live in Roseville.  I began tutoring Math because I loved it and found it fascinating. I believe that Math is cumulative; if you get stuck you need to go back and find the "breaking point" and then you will "get" the rest of the lesson.

B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering - UC Davis 2005

My course of study at UC Davis has given me a strong background in Mathematics.  I also was a student at Woodcreek High School, where I learned the foundations of my present knowledge in Mathematics.  I understand how the tools of Mathematics applies to the "bigger picture"; in other words, I know that the study of Mathematics provides analytical problem-solving tools necessary to approach real world problems in the physical sciences, as well as the economic and business worlds.

As a tutor, I will explain the complexities of Mathematics from many different approaches to help complement the individual student's unique learning style.  I am calm, patient, and derive satisfaction from sharing knowledge with others.
